Kim and Tracee''s Crazy Oprah Adventure - part 2
Thurday afternoon arrives, and I''m as prepared as I could be to go see Oprah. Since Cam was out of town at a real estate convention, and I wouldn''t be home until late, I decided to have the kids stay at their Grandma''s house for the night. Madge took Jesse because she lives close to her school, and my mom took Avery because the bus comes right past her house.
I phone Tracee to see if she is on schedule. (Sometimes she can be fashionably late.) Yes, she was on schedule. Our plan was to get away early, just incase of any setbacks along the way. We figured 3.5 hours gave us more than enough time, with a little extra to grab a bite....Or so we thought.
It was a nice clear sunny afternoon at 3:30pm when Tracee arrives at my door. So off we go down the road with excitement in our chatter as we discuss what Oprah''s venue may be like. About 10 minutes into the drive I blurt out, "Oh no Tracee, I forgot the bag of Jesse''s pj''s and clothes to drop off at Madge''s.
"No worries." Tracee said, "We have plenty of time so lets just turn around and go back."
I couldn''t believe it! I had even left the bag outside on my car hood so I would see it as I passed it in the driveway. Oh well, Tracee was right, we had lots of time. Oprah didn''t start till 7:00pm and it was a two hour drive at the most.
Back on track and hitting the highway, we continue to chat about the anticipated evening ahead. About 45 minutes into our drive, it begins to rain.
"Oh shoot!" Tracee says, "I forgot my umbrella."
"Oh no. I forgot mine too." I reply.
I had especially bought a little compact umbrella yesterday that I could put in my purse....UGHHH!!
Needing to look our best for Oprah, and knowing we had a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the arena, we decide that once we are off the highway we will stop at a store to pick one up.
In theory that was a great plan, but once off the highway, we could only see a few stores that may carry an umbrella and they were on the other side of the road, and the traffic was too heavy to cross. It would take a long time to get to the other side and back again. Traffic was slowing us down alot but the rain had nearly slowed to a stop, so we figured we would be okay....Or so we thought.
Getting closer to our destination there was alot of sudden lane turns we needed to make, at least according to our GPS. With Tracee''s well maneuvered driving skills, we narrowly excape a couple of fender benders, but it was close. Other than a few cars honking at us, it was all good.
Time was getting tight, but we could see Rogers Arena in the distance, so we knew we were close. There would be no time to stop and get a bite somewhere, but decide a hot dog at the arena would suffice.
Crowds of people filled the sidewalks, all making their way to see Oprah. One by one we watch as their umbrellas began to pop up. Yes, the skies were opening up and the rain was beginning to fall hard.
"This is so not good Tracee." I say in with angst in my voice.
"I know!" She shrieks. "There is no time or place to get an umbrella Now."
Oh well, there was nothing we could do about that, short of offering alot of money to someone for their umbrella, which I seriously contemplated. For now, we could only focus on finding the Costco parking lot because it was the closest to the arena.
With Tracee paying all her attention on the road, and me looking at the GPS for guidance, we almost miss the Costco sign. All of a sudden it seems to appear out of no where, but we are on the outside lane. Tracee swiftly hit the brake pedal and turns on her blinker, but none of the drivers on the inside lane would let us in, and the drivers behind us were honking their horns, so we had no choice but to pass it!!
"what now?" Tracee shouted.
"I don''t know!! Just keep going. We will have to go around the block and come back." I said.
Yes, once again, in theory this was a good idea, but when you have the blind leading the blind, not so much!! Somehow....someway, we got lost, and way off track. I can''t believe it. What started off as a well planned, properly executed day is falling apart.
At this rate, I wonder, am I ever going to get my book to Oprah???
End of part 2 - Stayed tuned for the conclusion on Monday.
